Natural Skepticism
9/11 is a highly emotional subject. And people react to it in a highly emotional way. If all we have read and/or seen about September 11 are the images fed to us by the mass-media, and all we know about the story that those images tell is the framing of the events offered by the U.S. Government, then it is perhaps reasonable to think that 19 Arabs, under the direction of a crazed lunatic in a cave in the Middle East, used box cutters and guile to thwart a multi-trillion dollar defense apparatus. But any thorough consideration and investigation into the hard facts of 9/11 will unearth evidence that makes the 19 Arab hijacker narrative a wholly unreasonable consideration. But even so, this highly emotional subject proves difficult to discuss rationally and seriously. There seems to be some kind of emotional investment we have in believing what we have been told by our 'leaders', by the people in positions of authority over us. Or, perhaps, we do not have the emotional fortitude to bear the implications of being lied to and duped so easily and horrifically.
A typical example of the common reaction people offer on the subject of 9/11 comes from a professor of physics from BYU. Steven Jones, perhaps the leading scientist actively involved in researching and debunking the government's official 9/11 story, presented to one of his colleagues for review a paper he wrote detailing a mountain of evidence suggesting U.S. government involvement in 9/11. The colleague responded by saying to Professor Jones, 'I do not believe in conspiracy theories and UFO's.' This type of strongly opinionated, demonstrative response is common. Perhaps even understandable.

Notice, however, two other important things about the response. Firstly, the opinion, though strongly held, is based on no consideration of the evidence and data presented to him beyond the relentless spinning of the Bush/Cheney Administration. An administration now embroiled in a number of high-profile scandals, including the complex and well-orchestrated campaign of lies and deceptions to pull this country into an illegal war with Iraq; resulting in the deaths of more than 100,000 Iraqis and Americans alike. Secondly, most of us, including the skeptical BYU professor,do believe in a conspiracy theory. Namely, the neat, clean, easily rendered tale that 19 Arab hijackers, under the direction of a bearded man in a cave in Afghanistan, conspired with laptops and box cutters to wholly breach the multi-trillion dollar intelligence and military apparatus of the most powerful nation in the history of the world. That, it seems reasonable to suggest, is a highly dubious conspiracy theory in need of defense against a substantial pile of evidence standing against it.
That 9/11 remains highly emotional is understandable. That it is difficult to look at and consider even more than we've already been forced to endure through the media and from this Administration over the past five years is understandable. But we must recognize that 9/11 is also an event that is still, to this day, being used to enact policies and wage wars that are killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians trying to live the same normal lives as us. We must recognize that there is substantial evidence pointing to the fact that the mass-murderers of thousands of New Yorkers on 9/11 have ascended to positions of immense power and decision-making up and down the civilian, military, and government chain of command in our country. Our apathy and fear of facing the truth will do nothing but perpetuate a status quo and feed a geopolitical system that will continue to murder innocent human beings, destroy the environment, funnel wealth and resources into fewer and fewer hands, and chain us to a life burdened by a terror invented, packaged, and delivered by the very people assigned to work for and safeguard us. We as a species are racing, like obedient lemmings, toward a predictable, catastrophic, and wholly avoidable demise. The truth, and the people who have hijacked that truth, need to be unmasked. Only then can our alliance as fellow human beings come together to creatively collaborate and move toward realizing our greatest collective potential.
